OUTDOOR CLASSROOM PROJECT at SMS!
Have you wondered and been concerned with what's happening with the trees in front of the Middle School? Fear not! A BIG shout out to Gino Cresta and the Dept. Of Public Works (DPW) for assisting the school department with a project to benefit our students.
Beginning in September, students, with the help of teachers and staff, will embark on a year long project identifying trees, plants, birds and animals in the space. Using the Audubon Society and other resources, students will build bird houses, create a pollinator garden, and plant native woodland plants as needed. Students will make signs identifying the plants and animals as well as mapping the outdoor space for students, teachers, and visitors to use when visiting the Outdoor Classroom. Flexible seating in the form of benches, some purchased and others built by students, will allow teachers to construct amphitheater seating for a class play or presentation, such as the preschooler's Barnyard Babies program. We expect that multiple classes will be able to use the space at the same time. As Forest Avenue is the entrance to the Swampscott Middle School, it is our hope that this Outdoor Classroom will give visitors a small sample of all the wonderful learning opportunities that are happening in our schools.
